ABOUT ME
My name is Joe Haining. I am a freelance developmental and copy-editor based in Hull, UK. I am an Advanced Professional grade member (the highest level of membership) of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP). After graduating in English Studies, I worked in various fields, including several years teaching English as a second/other language, which gave me in-depth knowledge and appreciation of English usage.
In my editorial career I have worked on a wide range of material, both on paper and on screen. I now most commonly edit non-fiction books mainly in humanities and social sciences fields, including academic trade publications and memoirs, offering both copy-editing and developmental editing. Within this, I work regularly with university presses and other publishers, as well as organisations including several UNESCO-affiliated bodies. I also enjoy and have extensive experience working on non-publishing projects including legal documents, website content, instruction manuals, academic/research papers and magazine articles, and also creating captions and subtitles for video.
My areas of particular interest and knowledge include literature, music, sport, LGBTQ+ issues, social sciences, history and current affairs.

TESTIMONIALS
T
“Joe has demonstrated excellent copy-editing abilities, becoming a dependable and reliable freelancer. The copy-editing work required by ICP is wide ranging in subject matter and we expect our copy-editors to be meticulous with regards to quality of language, consistency and accuracy of basic scientific content; all copy-editing is rigorously checked in-house. The job therefore expects Joe to be punctual, consistent and thorough and in this regard he has never failed me. He has proven to have a confident grasp of many branches of science, and I know he can be relied upon to meet our high expectations. He is a pleasant person to work with and is always polite. I highly recommend Joe to any future employers.”
Imperial College Press
“I can honestly say, it has been a fantastic experience. This is my fifth book and easily the best experience. Without a shadow of a doubt, you have made the book better. Not just from a language perspective, but from some amazing knowledge that has clarified and improved the text. Thank you so much.”
Dr Mark Doidge, University of Brighton
